Backstory: Shortly after graduation, Nat went off the grid. Bucky went missing, and her goal was to find him. Weeks turned into months and over a year later, SHIELD was ready to call on their investment in her. Realizing there was Work To Do and that James wouldn't want her to spend her life searching, Nat acquiesced and became a full-fledged SHIELD operative. She was dispatched all over the world to complete missions, both solo and partnered. Hell, she helped recruit some pretty big name superheroes at one point (AND kept them from killing their damn selves and each other). She quickly became a VIA, Very Important Asset to the powers at SHIELD.
Before Shit hit the fan with the world, Natasha decided she needed a safe place. A place to be a tiny part of herself and call home (or her version of it). While looking through some SHIELD files (a girl gets bored sometimes), she found Leftover, and more interestingly, that a lot of her old classmates had settled there. She bought a cabin in the woods just outside of town and became a Leftoverian. Shortly after moving in and catching up with her bff, she went in with Selina Kyle to buy an old, run-down building and quickly converted it into a dive bar. It's hideous and awesome!
Of course, that bar is just a front. Because after Shit hit the fan, she was forced to go back underground. But a spy can't keep still for long, so she started taking up freelance jobs. The return of an asset here, rescue of a child there, Nat mostly does bad things for good people or things the law can't. A few years ago, she hired a mediator (can't always make appointments when you're out of the country :( ) and the money's been rolling in.
For now, life is pretty okay for Nat.
But it's been a long 10 years of searching for James. Anywhere a mission takes her, she still keeps an eye out. Because she can't let him go.
